London Met deploy Avocor interactive displays to enhance collaborative learning environments across their campus in Islington, London.

02 November 2017 | By Avocor

London Metropolitan University is a vibrant, socially diverse higher education establishment based in Central London. Established in 2002, the renowned Times Higher Education Supplement announced London Met as the highest ranking millennial university in 2017.

The challenge

The University is currently undertaking a multi-million-pound refresh to create a single and unified university campus in Islington, London. Their One Campus, One Community (OCOC) initiative includes the complete refurbishment of the current campus based in Islington as well as the creation of new buildings and a significant investment in technology and resources.

The project aims to increase the ability to teach and also to position the University at the heart of the local community. The fundamental objective of the venture is to enhance the student experience and enable collaboration across the University.

Oliver Holmes, Deputy Director of Technology and Operations at the University, is involved with the project to transform the way teaching is delivered across London Met and using technology to make learning more interactive and collaborative.

“We have a student community here at London Met who is making significant financial investments in their higher education. We live in an interactive world and our students told us that they want to be active participants in their learning” explains Holmes. “As a central provider of IT and AV to the University, we understand technology and how to deploy solutions that can help deliver collaborative environments, whilst our teaching faculty are experts in their own subject field. Our challenge is to choose the right type of technology that can be easily adopted by our staff to create a learning environment which facilitates collaboration and communication.”

There is also a strong desire to create a learning environment that mirrors practice in K-12 education and to use technology to create and deliver interactive, inspiring lessons. In 2016, the One Campus, One Community Programme commissioned a small number of pilot classrooms on the main University campus in Islington with the primary objective of creating spaces that enabled lecturers to move seamlessly from lesson delivery to small group participation.

“The use of technology and furniture was a key factor in our pilot classrooms,” says Holmes “we needed to ensure that lecturers had access to display technology which was interactive yet simple to use alongside wireless connectivity, enabling students to contribute to lessons from their own devices.”

The solution

“We knew we were looking for some sort of interactive display technology; some of our classrooms did have projector and whiteboard technology installed but we wanted to look at the very latest advances in technology within this space. We visited the BETT show in 2015 and saw the solution from Avocor. The overall look and feel of the display were exactly what we were looking for whilst the 4K screen delivered outstanding visuals and clarity.”

Holmes initially purchased an 84” display for the University’s Guildhall School of Business and Law ‘Business Incubator’ based in Moorgate, London. The Incubator is an initiative run by the University that provides advice and support to start-up companies, helping them grow and flourish.

“As soon as we installed the Avocor 84” display, connected one user’s Macbook and saw his desktop in true 4K resolution, we all instantly had a ‘wow’ moment,” says Holmes “there are a number of reasons why we have made the decision to standardise on Avocor here at London Met, we are extremely impressed with the overall aesthetics of the solution and the writing experience of the Avocor Intelligent Touch is outstanding. London Met is a widening participation university with a lot of mature students, we need to invest in technology which is simple to grasp and in doing so, help to close the gap between the digital native and those who are less astute with interactive technology, Avocor helps us to do this.”

The University is working to install the Avocor solution in all classrooms and teaching spaces across the campus over the next few years. With a variety of sizes available, as well as pre-installed educational software, London Met can enjoy a uniform solution across the University, ensuring that teachers and students have consistency, regardless of the teaching area they are using.

“Another great feature of the Avocor solution is the Eclipse interactive teaching software which is available with the display. Our staff love the simplicity of the software and enjoy the fact that they can create and save lesson as well as sharing content to students efficiently.”

The future

“We have seen a great response to the Avocor interactive displays from the teaching staff with a number of lecturers requesting to be timetabled in classrooms that have the displays already installed increasing weekly. Overall we are delighted with the Avocor solution and how it is helping us transform our teaching here at London Met.”

Altro Limited deployed Avocor interactive displays to improve meeting efficiency and employee engagment, transforming their meeting rooms into collaboration spaces.

29 August 2017 | By Avocor

Altro Limited have been at the forefront of innovation for almost 100 years. Today, working closely with architects, end customers, engineers, designers and contractors around the world, their insight and expertise have helped transform everyday spaces into environments that can improve the wellbeing of everyone that uses them. Trading since 1919, Altro is a family owned business based in Letchworth, Hertfordshire with offices across Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

The challenge: Adapting for growth

Following rapid acceleration, Altro commissioned a multi-site, audio visual refresh across it’s key customer facing and employee spaces including their training rooms, meeting rooms, reception areas and conference areas. One of the principal objectives of the upgrade was to remove the current barriers that faced employees with the existing meeting space hardware, as the myriad of legacy technology had led to many different communication protocols, making the technology challenging to use.

Gideon Tester, Business Digital Systems Manager and project lead:

“We needed to standardise on a technology platform which delivered a consistent user experience and made the technology accessible for all. We wanted to deploy a solution which was easy to use for all levels of user and could facilitate simple wireless connectivity between meeting room screens and any device, whether that be iOS, Android, Windows OS or Mac OSX. We were also keen to enable screen sharing from any device.”

Choosing the right solution

Gideon started a full evaluation of available, collaborative, meeting space technology and was immediately impressed with the Avocor F series. One of the benefits to the solution that he identified was that it was platform agnostic, and as such, enabled Altro to build their ideal, perfect environment, tailored to their specific needs and requirements.

“One of the key reasons we decided to standardise on the Avocor solution was its simplicity. When we saw the display and that it was built on a Windows 10 platform, we immediately felt that all of our employees would be able to embrace the technology which in turn would maximise our investment. With just one click, our staff can control everything in the meeting room directly from the display. The Windows 10 operating platform means that we can take advantage of all-in-one video conferencing with Skype for Business as well as the full Microsoft Office Suite.”

Gideon explains “We recognised that we could create a bespoke solution with the Avocor F series at the hub. The range of sizes meant we could choose a screen size that fitted the space the display was deployed within whilst still standardising on the manufacturer to deliver the same experience for all employees.”

Altro and their system integrator partner, DWM, were then able to add in other elements appropriate to the environment. In larger areas, audio was provided using state-of-the-art Bose sound systems, whilst smaller rooms utilised the Avocor soundbar, providing crystal clear sound throughout. This approach has meant that Altro weren’t faced with additional costs for elements in the solution would remain redundant in certain spaces.

Increasing productivity through technology

Altro has witnessed immediate benefits in deploying the Avocor solution, making the business more productive and efficient. “We don’t conduct a workshop anymore and then have to wait weeks for output or follow up, instead we are able to participate in a meeting and then have meeting notes shared immediately. Screen share across multiple locations has had a positive impact, with all meeting delegates feeling more engaged and included in the meeting topic. The support that we have had from Avocor has been exceptional, they have worked tirelessly to ensure we get the very best out of our technology investment and when there have been any technical obstacles, their customer service team have identified issues efficiently and responsibly.”

Continued support

Gideon has been delighted with the transformational impact that the Avocor displays have made within Altro. “With the Avocor display solution, the transition from ideation to tangible outcome has made us take decisions quicker and more efficiently, making our business more productive as a result.”

Childs Hill Primary School upgrades to Avocor displays, enhancing collaboration and interaction in the classroom

25 July 2017 | By Avocor

Child’s Hill Primary School is a diverse and vibrant mainstream Junior School based in Barnet, London. With 379 pupils, the school endeavours to provide an environment where children are academically, socially and emotionally prepared for the future.

Embracing learning through collaboration

Following a transition to a two-form entry school, Headmaster Daniel Hawkins made the decision to evaluate the existing front of class display technology, modernising the learning experience for the students.

“Everyone is so used to using touch technology in their personal lives everyday and we wanted to try and replicate that experience in the school” says Dan “this, combined with the explosion of tablet devices across the school network, lead us to try and find a solution which moved our students away from independent, personalised learning to a more collaborative learning environment for our pupils.”

The school was also looking to replace their legacy interactive whiteboard and projector technology as they felt it was out dated. Dan explains “We knew that the our existing display technology has come to the end of their lifecycle and we were faced with out of the date technology that just didn’t fit in with the way that teaching and learning was adapting in the classroom. This combined with the rising costs of replacement bulbs meant that we were just throwing good money after bad.”

Improving lesson delivery

Child’s Hill Primary has deployed Google Classroom across the entire school network as well as using Microsoft applications such as PowerPoint for lesson content creation and delivery. One of the key advantages of the Avocor solution is that it is not locked down to propriety software, ensuring that the transition between applications, the internet and presentations is quick and simple.

Teachers can even access legacy teaching content through the Avocor Eclipse teaching software, which comes as standard with all Avocor display solutions, making the importing of previously created lessons in 3rd party whiteboard software easy.

In addition, the teachers love that the pen is so accurate, improving the writing experience and making annotations much clearer to read than with the School’s previous whiteboards.

“The teachers are really impressed with the speed of the interactive display, getting lessons started is quick and easy, meaning less time is wasted getting the lessons started and more time is spent on learning.”

Increasing student engagement

Talking about the Avocor solution has helped improve attainment, Dan says “the solution has been a great tool in helping pupils increase their understanding of complex problems, the children have had great fun with an interactive maths application for instance, we are also impressed with the quality and reliability of the Avocor solution, downtime is a thing of the past.”

When describing the benefits Dan has seen in the classroom, he explains, “The displays are incredibly intuitive and so easy to use that lessons really do flow better and quicker, leading to the children being much more engaged during their lessons, they can really interact together around the subject at hand. Having the Avocor solution here at Child’s Hill Primary has raised the levels of interactive, participation and engagement within the classroom.”

Customer engagement

“In addition to the benefits we have seen with the Avocor solution, we are also very impressed with how Avocor and their partner, Javalin Networks, have worked with School to ensure that we get the very best return on our technology investment, we haven’t just been sold a product and left to get on with it which is refreshing.”

The Solution

Child’s Hill School purchased the Avocor F-6500 interactive solution, designed to enhance collaboration in the classroom. Powered by Windows 10, the solution is built with Avocor Intelligent Touch technology, delivering a smooth, accurate and responsive writing experience which is intuitive and easy to use. The solution provides instant access to the Windows Store, opening a world of content and educational apps to engage every pupil’s imagination from a trusted and safe environment.

Rothwell Junior School and Rothwell Victoria Infant School refreshes front of class display technology with Avocor to offer their children the best possible classroom experience.

24 July 2017 | By Avocor

Rothwell Junior School and Rothwell Victoria Infant School are two large federated schools based in Rothwell, Northamptonshire. With 676 pupils ranging from 4-11 in age attending the school, the school’s vision is to achieve the highest academic standards for all.

Head of Year Three and Class Teacher, Gareth Rust was tasked with upgrading 33 classrooms which had legacy and out dated whiteboards to interactive touch screen displays. Avocor talks to Gareth about the project and his decision to choose Avocor.

The reason for change

In 2016, the School made the decision that the existing whiteboard were no longer fit for purpose, with many of the whiteboards no longer able to respond to touch interactively. Ceiling mounted projectors were displaying low clarity images whilst even relatively low levels of ambient light coming into classrooms were causing the content on the whiteboards to be virtually unreadable. This combined with the spiralling costs of replacement projector bulbs meant that it was becoming more cost effective for the school to replace as opposed to repair.

“We were aware that technology had progressed considerably since when we had purchased our first generation interactive whiteboards.” says Gareth “this combined with the changes in the curriculum and the move towards more collaborative teaching and learning environments led us to evaluate our front of class display technology to ensure we were offering our children the best classroom experiences possible, we were looking for a display that would offer consistent and crystal-clear clarity for the children without compromising on the size of the display that the teaching staff were used to using, Avocor fitted the bill perfectly”

Finding the right solution

After making the decision that a refresh of the existing interactive display estate, Gareth and the Head teacher attended the Bett show in London to research what was available and the choice was vast, so worked with partner Laptop House to find a suitable solution.

“We spoke to a number of different interactive display manufacturers to establish which would best meet our needs” explains Gareth “We wanted to see how the different display technologies compared against each other and, importantly, how the different manufacturers’ technology was impacted by ambient light. We also keen to ensure screen clarity regardless of where you were sitting in the classroom, so we arrange for a number of different solutions to be evaluated”

Gareth was immediately impressed with the Avocor interactive solution and how the display met all his criteria. “The interface was simple to understand and one that all of our teaching faculty would embrace.”

Gareth also felt that the Avocor display demonstrated excellent value for money whilst the warranty period offered delivered ultimate peace of mind. “We felt that the cost of replacing our legacy technology offset the cost implications of ongoing maintenance of the antiquated solutions.”
Rothwell Junior School replaced all their 33 existing systems to Avocor and immediately saw the benefit with pupils able to read the displays, gaining more time in lesson to learn and teachers able to start using the displays instantly, with no complicated adoption training required.

07 March 2017 | By Avocor

Summary

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is a world class Higher Education Institution which offers aspiring musicians, actors, stage managers and theatre technicians a creative and stimulating environment in which to develop as artists and professionals. Widely considered a bastion of creative and professional practice, the Guildhall School actively promotes innovation, experiment and research.

The School recently completed a £90M project to expand its facilities, providing state-of-the-art performance and teaching spaces including: a 608-seat Concert Hall, a 223-seat Theatre, a Studio Theatre, three major rehearsal rooms, a TV studio suite and numerous teaching rooms, meeting spaces and conferencing facilities to attract the very best teaching faculty and student community.

One of the challenges faced by the deployment team at the School centred around how to create cloud-based, collaborative environments designed to enhance teaching and learning.

To help them address this challenge, the School engaged digital transformational consultants, Generation Digital to provide programme management and governance to help the School make the right investments based on best of breed technology and progress the programme forward to completion. Leading a joint team with the School, Generation Digital provided the project management, design, implementation, systems integration, training and change management expertise needed to support the deployment of the new technology within challenging timeframes.

There were several key project success criteria, specifically:

  • Create new revenue streams for the School by building an online learning platform - meeting the increased demand from international students
  • Enhance meeting and teaching spaces with the best collaboration tools in the market
  • Build a solution that both teachers and students will find easy and enjoyable to use
  • Limit the need for on-going capital hardware expenditure by facilitating cloud based storage.

The challenge

Guildhall School’s Head of IT, Richard Antonel, was charged with specifically IT facilities and infrastructure that could provide the highest possible levels of performance and future-proofing. He explains, “The scope (of the project) was to install the highest standard of teaching and learning equipment available at the time. The goal was to put students and teachers at the heart of the technology strategy. The School wanted to provide more students with internet-enabled learning systems, so they could learn anytime, anywhere. Since the School serves a wide range of students and teachers around the globe, they needed an affordable, flexible solution that would improve the learning experience for every student and teacher within every department. These new digital / cloud systems need human focused user experience allowing true global cloud collaboration without the burden of learning new and complex systems. Also they wanted to increase revenue by offering on-line courses or a mix of physical and virtual content courses.”

Solution Overview

To help make the right technology investments and ensure the project was a success, the School engaged Generation Digital to define the strategy and consult on the best technology solution to meet the requirements and tight timescales for deployment, whilst gaining the quickest return on investment. The central core of the solution were the interactive, multi-touch, 4K display screens deployed from Avocor, ranging from 65” through to 84”. One of the core principles of the Avocor solution is the fact that the solution is based on an open platform. This enabled Generation Digital to build a bespoke solution that met the needs of the School. Powered by Windows 10, the Avocor displays were perfect for the cloud based elements of the project, allowing users to access collaboration packages such as Microsoft Office 365, Skype for Business, Skype, Adobe Connect and Google Hangouts straight from the display. The Windows 10 operating system also ensured that users were presented with a familiar user interface rather than propriety software platforms that required extensive adoption training. MACI Innovation

MACI Innovation

MACI Innovation is an establised client project management consultancy who recently deployed the Avocor interactive solution to help their clients become more productive in large scale capital investment projects.

14 February 2017 | By Avocor

As an established client project management consultancy, MACI Innovation has generated a wealth of experience in the development and delivery of large scale, complex capital investment projects across the aviation, transportation and construction industries. The company ethos is to develop forward thinking solutions to complex issues and as a result of this they recently identified a growing issues within their client base in the construction industry around asset digitisation.

A recent McKinsey & Company report* on the construction industry and productivity identified that investment in infrastructure is growing at a rapid rate, equating to over $13 trillion by 2030.

‘Megaprojects’ will account for a greater share of these developments than ever before, however, research estimates that 98% of megaprojects have the potential to improve on performance and productivity through the increased use of data and technology - something other industries have achieved with great success.

The principle areas highlighted in the report where these improvements could be made include:

  • Improved organisation, decision making and innovations in the procurement process
  • A consolidated, consistent and efficient approach to communication across locations, departments and suppliers
  • Utilisation of technological advances in the management of costs and finances
  • Effective utilisation and management of data

‘The industry has not yet embraced new digital technologies that need up-front investment, even if the long-term benefits are significant’

MACI Innovation approached Avocor to deploy their Open Collaboration Solution (F series) in their offices to specifically enhance process digitalisation (the process of moving away from paper and towards cloud based, real-time shared of information to improve collaboration)

In an industry where digital device implementation is limited, it was imperative for MACI to choose an platform which could be used in meeting or huddle spaces but was simple and easy to use. With its embedded Windows 10 operating system, the Avocor Open Collaboration Solution provides a familiar user interface that is instantly recognisable. Users can access software applications such as PowerPoint, Word and Excel directly from the display or connect people together using cloud based communication platforms such as Skype for Business or Google Hangout.

Because the Avocor proposition is platform agnostic and completely flexible, MACI could integrate 3rd party UC&C tools such as Autodesk, Navisworks and Adobe PDF to assist the digitisation of BIM and CAD drawings to create a collaboration solution which was tailored to their individual needs and requirements.

Simultaneously, the Avocor Intelligent Touch using InGlass™ technology delivers an extremely responsive touch experience with incredibly accurate annotations, capturing version changes and enabling content to be shared virtually, anywhere in the world.

MACI Innovation has now deployed the Avocor solution at their Headquarters and are positioning the solution as a key element in asset digitisation across their construction and design client base, leading the way in improving productivity in this rapidly growing sector.

Barry Roberts, Head of IT Support Services talks about why they choose the Avocor F interactive displays

20 October 2016 | By Avocor

As part of Dauntsey’s School development plans, the new ‘Olive Building’ was commissioned to be ready for the new academic year starting September 2016. The Olive Building is dedicated to teaching Geography, Maths and Business Studies. As Head of IT Support Services at Dauntsey’s, Barry and his team started their search for interactive display technology for the 14 classrooms in the new build.

Barry was aware of the wide range of interactive flat panels available in the market place and after trialling several brands at the school he decided to visit BETT in January 2016, with the objective to review all of the available panels to find the best possible fit for the school’s needs and requirements. He visited the Avocor stand at the show and was particularly impressed with the demonstration of the Avocor Intelligent Touch using InGlass™ technology*, ‘It had the wow factor when it came to writing and annotation’ said Barry. ‘I saw an answer to the problem many of the teachers were experiencing with screen lag and interference from clothing when using infrared based panels.’

Avocor visited Dauntsey’s providing a demonstration panel to enable a more in-depth evaluation. With a panel on-site, Barry was able to showcase the interactive panel to the academic fraternity to gain feedback and buy-in. The feedback was extremely encouraging and the decision was made to standardise the classrooms with the Avocor F series with 4K screen resolution with the OPS slot, (Open Pluggable Specification). Six of the classrooms have the 65” panels and the remaining 8, dedicated to the Maths department, have the 84” panels. ‘The teacher’s comments have been very positive’ explains Barry, ‘they are delighted with the Avocor Intelligent Touch using InGlass™ technology, they find their writing is crystal clear regardless of where the pupils are sitting within the classroom and the fact the screens come with embedded Microsoft Windows 10 operating system to give teachers a device that they are familiar with has proven extremely popular, users are literally using the screens as huge tablets with little or no extra training.’

Barry goes on to explain ‘Avocor Note is also receiving favourable feedback, which allows the teaching staff to use as normal white boarding software. We are in the middle of implementing office 365 across the school estate and the teachers are enthusiastic regarding the utilization of applications like OneNote directly from the panel. We also feel that by choosing a panel with an OPS slot, we have future-proofed ourselves as we can upgrade the OPS when it is required without having to change the entire panel which could end up being costly.’

*Avocor Intelligent Touch using InGlass™ technology is a unique and revolutionary technology and comes as standard with the Avocor F series display portfolio. It delivers superior and responsive writing whilst annotations are smooth and precise enabling users to experience tablet-like technology on a large format interactive display.
